Effective June 1, 2016, the Ontario government has introduced changes to the automobile insurance system to help make insurance premiums more affordable. These changes involve the reduction in coverage as they relate to the Statutory Accident Benefits portion of your auto insurance policy. These are the benefits you receive if you are injured in an auto accident, regardless of fault.

Your policy won’t change until it is time for it to be renewed. If your policy renews on or after June 1, 2016, the reforms and new choices will apply. Details surrounding these choices are outlined in this pamphlet. The new lower standard benefits will take effect on your renewal date.

Under the medical and rehabilitation (non- catastrophic injuries) and the attendant care for non- catastrophic injuries, the coverage has been reduced to $65,000.00 but you can choose to increase the benefit to $130,000.00. For medical and rehabilitation and attendant care for catastrophic injuries, the benefits have been combined and reduced from $2 million to $1 million.

Also changing on all automobile policies is the standard comprehensible deductible. Effective June 1, 2016, the standard deductible for Comprehensive coverage has been increased from $300 to $500. Should you wish to lower this back to $300, please contact our office.
